Hiking News - Saturday, July 25th
A Hike with something for everyone. . .
We will drive up to Rainbow Lake, west of Gunnison, to hike into the West Elk Wilderness area. The trailhead is at the end of Rainbow Lake Rd.
Since we're going to be right near Rainbow Lake - fishing, picnicking, grilling burgers are also possibilities, but are not part of the "hiking plan."
We will meet at the North end of the Wal-Mart parking lot at 7:00 AM to figure out our transportation system and leave by 7:15 AM.

Hike Details:
Short, easy & kid-friendly: The first part of the trail has a very gradual elevation gain and wanders through an old, dense forest for about 1 to 1½ miles before breaking out into a large open meadow with a variety of flowers in bloom.
Moderate: For the next stage of the hike there is the option of hiking about 1½ miles up the ridge to the top of South Baldy Mountain at 12,400’ or skirting around the East side of South Baldy. South Baldy usually has many different flowers to enjoy.
Whichever route is chosen the next goal is Middle Baldy Mountain at 12,600’ – and another 1½ miles.
More Difficult: Another ½ mile will take those who desire to the top of Middle Baldy at 12,700’.
If the weather is still good and people wish to, the next destination will be North Baldy at 12,700’. North Baldy has good views of West Elk Peak, Storm Pass and The Castles.
I have been in this area four times about this time of the year and each time have encountered herds of elk ranging between 25 - 75. Hopefully we'll see some this time.
Approximate round trip numbers for Middle Baldy Mountain - 9 miles, 2300 total elevation gain. Add a little more if we go on to Middle and North Baldy.
