CHANGE OF PLANS FOR THE HIKE ON Sunday, July 19^th

Still, Great fellowship, wonderful views, spectacular flowers.

This hike will be weather dependent so stay tuned at the Summer Life blog for updates!

After scoping out the Daisy Pass area today, we decided that this was probably not the most family friendly hike we could think of. Since this is our first hike together this year, and since we have had a lot of interest from families with smaller children, we have decided to move the hike back to Snodgrass Trail.

We will hike from the Washington Gulch end of the trail, and our goal will be the overlook that marks the high point of the trail. We were there this morning, and the trail is in wonderful shape and the wildflowers are profuse. Those who wish to relax, or return to their cars at any point, will be able to simply turn around and walk back. The full round trip distance is around 5 miles.

We will still meet at the church at 1:30 pm on Sunday, and caravan/carpool up to Crested Butte, and begin the hike together. Please be ready to LEAVE the church parking lot by 1:30.

Middle Baldy Hike – Saturday, July 25^th

Saturday, July 25 we will drive up to Rainbow Lake west of Gunnison to hike into the West Elk Wilderness area. The trailhead is at the end of Rainbow Lake road. This is a hike that has something for everyone. If you're interested in a short, easy, kid-friendly hike, then you can hike just the first part of the trail which has a very gradual elevation gain and wanders through an old, dense forest for about 1-1 1/2 miiles, then breaks out into a large open meadow which should have a variety of flowers in bloom. From this point we have a choice of hiking about 1 1/2 miles up the ridge to the top of South Baldy Mtn. at 12,400' or skirting around the East side of South Baldy. I haven't been on top of South Baldy this season but it usually has lots of flowers of many different varities. Which ever route we take, our next goal will be another 1 1/2 miles to Middle Baldy Mountain at 12,600. We could then continue another half mile or so to the top of Middle Baldy at 12,700. If the weather looks good and we're still good, we could go on to North Baldy at 12,700 with good views of West Elk Peak, Storm Pass, and The Castles. I have been in this area four times about this time of the year and each time have encountered herds of elk ranging between 25 - 75. Hopefully we'll see some this time. Approximate round trip numbers for Middle Baldy Mountain - 9 miles, 2300 total elevation gain. Add a little more if we go on to Middle and North Baldy.
Since we're going to be right near Rainbow lake, fishing, picnicking, grilling burgers are also possibilities, but are not part of the "hiking plan".
